New MK Knives & Tools Knife Venn and 10th Anniversary: The Wait Is Over!

October 16, 2024

From The Idea To Reality – Let’s Welcome The Venn Knife

From idea to reality, and here it is: the new MK knife, named Venn. The concept for this knife was born in early 2024, driven by the celebration of MK Knives & Tools’ 10th anniversary in October of the same year. The initial design, which went through several modifications, finally reached production in the workshop. After the early rough tests, it entered the prototyping phase, where the first Venn knives were created.

During this time, the name of the new knife was also taking shape. The goal was to find a name that would accurately describe the new MK blade, capture its character, and carry a positive meaning in different languages. The name “Venn” comes from the “Venn Diagram,” used in mathematics to illustrate relationships between sets. The MK workshop world is a combination of various elements: materials, engineering and production knowledge, experience, manual skills, and design vision. The common point where these aspects meet is the final product. That’s how “Venn” quickly became attached to the project, initially as a working title and soon as the permanent name.

Friendly Name For A Trusted Tool

Further analysis of the name across different languages confirmed it as the perfect choice. In English, “Venn” is linked to the Venn Diagram. In parts of Scandinavia, it means “friend.” In the Netherlands, “ven” refers to natural bodies of water and wetlands, and it has a similar meaning in German. In places like Ireland, “Venn” is also a common surname. Venn, designed to be a reliable companion for outdoor adventures, truly lives up to its name as a friend, a partner on hikes, and a helper for enjoying nature.

Special Anniversary Logo

Since the idea for the new knife came from the celebration of MK Knives & Tools’ 10th anniversary in October 2024, the need for special marking on the prototypes naturally arose. This led to the creation of the 10th-anniversary logo, featuring the classic MK logo integrated into the number 10, designed to match the style of engravings traditionally found on MK knives.

This anniversary logo will only be placed on the first 20 Venn knives, regardless of the steel, materials, or finish used in each. After these 20 pieces are made, the Venn will continue to be produced with the classic MK logo.

General Specifications and Design Highlights

As planned, Venn is a versatile outdoor knife designed to appeal to a wide range of users. It has an overall length of 214 mm (8.425″) with a 91 mm (3.58″) blade, 4 mm (0.15″) thick, and 29 mm (1.14″) at its widest point. The handle, featuring two subtle yet distinct undercuts that fit naturally in the hand, measures 123 mm (4.84″) in length, 26 mm (1.02″) at its widest, and 15 mm (0.59″) thick.

Size-wise, Venn is compact, very handy, and most importantly, lightweight. Its weight of around 140g (4.93 oz) is a direct result of its well-thought-out construction.

Non-Traditional Hidden Tang with Screwed-On Scales

The knife features a design previously seen in the Sentinel model. A wide section of steel runs almost the entire length of the handle, except for a small portion at the end. This steel section is encased by scales that are pre-machined from the inside and perfectly fitted. The scales are press-fitted around the hidden tang and secured with stainless steel screws.

Lanyard Hole: A Few More Words About the Handle

The Venn knife handle features a newly designed lanyard hole, a first for MK Knives & Tools. This hole is precision-milled directly into the handle material. With the modern handle materials and techniques used by MK, this design is both safe and durable. The lanyard can be used to secure the knife to prevent loss or make it easier to pull from its sheath.

Kydex Sheath: Just as Important as the Knife

The Venn comes with a Kydex (Holstex) sheath, which is always a key part of MK Knives & Tools’ designs. As always, the sheath is just as important as the knife itself. It’s custom-fitted to the blade and handle, providing a secure hold while allowing easy access. Staying true to MK’s style, the sheath features matching color accents, a vertical carry belt loop, and engravings unique to each knife series (read more about the series here). It’s also compatible with MK’s buckles for personalization of carrying style:

Venn Knife Variations

Like other models from MK Knives & Tools, the Venn knife will be available in various material and color combinations, with different blade grinds and finishes. The prototypes that first went on sale were made from Elmax steel due to its versatility and the extensive experience we have working with it. This makes the pre-prototype, prototype, and product launch phases much smoother.

Let’s celebrate the 10th anniversary with Venn and enjoy it together!
