A sense of personal safety is crucial for everyone. It’s important that efforts to achieve comfort in this area for one person do not disrupt the harmony of another. In this spirit, the Sentinel knife was created. Designed with tactical aesthetics, it supports the user in crisis situations. Sentinel means “guardian” or “protector.” Its dimensions and construction make it ideal for survival applications, but it’s also a versatile blade for any outdoor expedition. The Sentinel knife is an energetic design for lovers of quick, compact treks into the wild. Its handle, combining hidden tang and full tang construction features, ensures an incredibly comfortable grip.
Since July 2026, Sentinel has entered the next stage of its evolution. All newly manufactured models are now produced as Sentinel FT (Full Tang), combining the original design philosophy with an updated full tang construction and a steel guard while preserving the knife’s proportions, balance and ergonomics.
Sentinel FT – The Evolution of a Proven Design
Sentinel knife is designed for survival and built for those who appreciate tactical gear. With an overall length of 272mm (10.71″), its construction and materials make it a tough, reliable tool for anyone who needs gear they can count on in extreme situations. After all, a Sentinel is a guardian—meant to provide dependable support when it matters most.
Since July 2026, Sentinel has been manufactured exclusively as Sentinel FT (Full Tang). The updated construction replaces the previous hidden tang design with a full tang extending throughout the entire handle. At the same time, the knife retains the original dimensions, balance and ergonomics that have defined the Sentinel project since its introduction. The redesign further increases structural rigidity while preserving the handling characteristics appreciated by Sentinel users.
Built for Strength and Precision
Sentinel knives are typically made from high-strength steels designed to handle heavy mechanical loads. Paired with a 5mm (0.2”) thick spine, this ensures exceptional durability, making it a reliable tool for demanding tasks. Despite its solid build, the 136mm (5.35”) blade is narrow enough (approx. 35mm at its widest point) to allow for precise handling while maintaining a strong cutting edge.
Tough Tool Steels for Extreme Performance
Most Sentinel knives are crafted from high-performance vanadium tool steels like Vanadis 4 Extra, Vanadis 23, less often Sleipner. These steels offer outstanding resistance to wear and mechanical stress but have lower corrosion resistance. To combat this, they are coated with protective finishes like black DLC coating (Diamond-Like Carbon coating with ~90 HRC hardness).
For those seeking a more corrosion-resistant option, Elmax steel provides a well-balanced combination of durability and rust resistance. This makes it a great choice for users who need a versatile knife. If you frequently operate in high-humidity environments, an Elmax Sentinel with a DLC coating is an excellent pick, offering both toughness and superior protection against rust.
Blade Grinds Tailored for the Task
Sentinel knives come with a variety of blade grinds, carefully selected to match their intended use. The grinds are designed to maintain the knife’s strength while optimizing performance in survival and tactical situations.
- High Flat Grind – Ideal for tough tasks like woodwork. Often paired with a false edge to improve penetration.
- Hollow Groove Grind – Designed for slicing efficiency in lighter tasks, such as camp cooking. The subtle concavity reduces material sticking and improves cutting precision.
- Combination Grinds – Some Sentinels feature mixed grinds, such as a groove grind along most of the edge for slicing, with a flat grind at the tip for added strength.
Blade profiles, including drop point and tanto, determine whether a Sentinel is better suited for specialized or more general-use tasks. Some models also feature fullers of varying sizes and other distinctive design elements unique to specific production runs.
Enhanced Control and Precision
Every Sentinel knife is designed for superior handling. Jimping on the spine provides extra traction, allowing for better control during precise cuts. This feature enhances cutting performance, improves guidance along the material, and makes high-pressure cuts more efficient.
Sentinel FT Full Tang Construction
The defining feature of Sentinel FT is its full tang construction extending throughout the entire handle. Precision-machined handle scales are securely attached using steel screws, creating an exceptionally rigid and durable structure designed for demanding outdoor, survival and field applications.
Compared to previous Sentinel generations, Sentinel FT introduces a precision-machined steel guard integrated with the tang. This solution provides additional hand protection while preserving the clean appearance and ergonomics characteristic of the Sentinel project.
Ergonomic Grip with Steel Guard
The slim, ergonomic handle provides a comfortable and secure hold. A 100mm (3.94″) grip section accommodates larger hands while maintaining excellent control.
Beginning with the Sentinel FT generation introduced in July 2026, the knife features a precision-machined steel guard replacing the previous integrated guard formed from the handle scales. This evolution enhances hand protection and structural durability while preserving the clean lines and ergonomics that have always defined the Sentinel design.
Practical Lanyard Pin for Security and Customization
At the end of the handle, a sturdy pin allows for attaching a lanyard, providing extra security against accidental drops. This also helps in quickly retrieving the knife from its sheath and serves as a safeguard against loss. Each Sentinel originally comes with a matching paracord lanyard, which can also hold a decorative knife bead for personalization.
Handle Materials: Strength, Comfort, and Collectibility
Sentinel knives feature handle scales in a range of materials. The most commonly used are G10 and Micarta, known for their exceptional durability. G10 is the toughest and offers a broad selection of colors, while Micarta—though slightly less durable—is valued for its elegant look and comfortable grip.
For those looking for a more collectible or premium finish, Sentinel handles are also available with stabilized wood inserts or carbon fiber accents, including classic carbon fiber and FatCarbon. Regardless of the material, the scales are secured with sturdy screws, seamlessly integrated into the knife’s overall design.
Kydex And Holstex For Convenience And Divercity
Kydex and Holstex are both used in Sentinel sheaths, offering convenience and variety. Kydex is known for its durability and practicality, providing a secure hold and easy access to the knife. Holstex, on the other hand, adds more style with its textured surface and variety of finishes, while still maintaining excellent strength and functionality. The sheaths on Sentinel knives come with original modules, typically featuring a textile loop. These modules are removable, and the sheath is compatible with the Adjustable Angular Buckle or Buckle for MOLLE Systems, both developed by MK Knives & Tools, allowing for customizable carrying options.
