Venn Knife! Versatile, Ethereal, Nifty, Nimble.
MK design, released in October 2024. The idea for the new knife originates from the brand’s 10th Anniversary. The Venn knife encapsulates a decade of knifemaking, showcasing the convergence between the knife’s creation process and users’ experiences. The result is a knife that embodies: Versatile: A highly universal outdoor blade. Ethereal: A design that is exceptionally aesthetic, with beautiful lines and proportions. Nifty: Very lightweight and compact, sized between the Scout and Nomad knives. Nimble: Extremely comfortable and efficient during tasks. Venn offers an incredibly comfortable handle, with the tang securely encased and screwed between two material scales. The construction ensures optimal proportions for durability and user comfort, providing a pleasant, insulated grip, even when working barehanded in cold weather.
More about Venn introduction you will read HERE.
Venn Knife – Essential Component of Camping Set
Venn is more than enough for most outdoor tasks you do with a knife. This isn’t about survival use at all; it’s for tasks that most users need a knife for while enjoying time in nature. If we look closely at these statistics, it would likely show that many knives used on trips to forests, during hikes, on mountain trails, or in camping kitchens have a size around 20-21 cm (about 8″). That wouldn’t be surprising. After all, we mainly use a knife in these situations for food preparation and other small tasks. Venn fits this style perfectly. With a total length of 214 mm (8.425″) and a blade thickness of 4 mm (0.15″), it works great for peeling and cutting fruits and vegetables, preparing meat, and cleaning fish. This type of blade, regardless of the steel and grind used, also performs well for whittling sticks or making kindling for a fire. In this case, for cutting wood for a campfire, you might use an axe or a larger knife capable of batoning wood, which, along with Venn, creates a universal camping set.
The Steel: Different Steels Offer Different Possibilities In Use
Even though Venn is designed as an outdoor blade and not meant for heavy tasks, using different steels offers wider options for its use. For example, with steels like Elmax, Becut, or MagnaCut, it will be very versatile. Made from stainless steel like Vanax, it will show weaker resistance to overload but will fit well with fishing gear or in salty water environments. Steels with increased wear resistance like Vanadis 4 Extra or Vanadis 23 will provide better resistance to overloads and mechanical damage, while properly applied coatings (DLC) will minimize rust properties. In this case, when working with wood, you can do a lot more.
Shape Of The Blade And Grinds Diversity
Just like other MK knives, Venn is made with various blade grinds. One of MK’s favorites for custom knives is the hollow groove grind (GG/Groove Grind), which provides excellent cutting properties, especially for tasks this specific knife is meant for. The Venn grinds catalog also includes full flat grind (FFG), high flat grind, options with false edge and without, and other innovative grinds characteristic of MK, like the combined grind: flat at the tip for strength and better penetration, and hollow groove further along (typical for “Postapo” series).
Venn blades are mostly profiled in the versatile drop point style, with a more pronounced bulge closer to the tip. This design, a hallmark of most MK blades, strengthens the tip and provides a larger cutting surface for single cuts. Jimping is a standard feature on the spine just behind the handle, offering thumb support for precise cuts and adding a decorative touch.
Handle Shape and Construction Matter
Venn knife handle is a solution found in Sentinel knives from MK. Knife has a hidden tang that is hard to compare with traditional hidden tang designs. In case of Venn it combines a comfortable grip with nearly full tang durability (knives with a full tang running through the entire length and width of the handle). This hidden tang is quite wide, and the two scales are precisely machined to fit snugly and are securely screwed, not glued or pinned into one piece of handle material. The scales wrap around the handle, so the hand doesn’t touch the steel, which can be uncomfortable in cold weather or when working without gloves.
Keep in mind that steel enclosed in handle will behave similarly to steel in MK full tang knives. The scales can occasionally be unscrewed to clean and maintain them, although with MK’s stainless and rust-resistant steels protected by a highly durable DLC coating, the risk of rusting is very low.
Ergonomically designed handle has two undercuts on the bottom side that fit fingers of almost any hand perfectly. Gripping and holding the handle in any way is very comfortable. Handle features a milled pattern typical of MK knives, which provides a non-slip surface and improves grip. Handle is equipped with a G10 guard formed from the profiling of the handle scales, preventing your hand from slipping onto the blade.
Interestingly, at the end of the handle, there is a pin for attaching an additional lanyard, shaped from G10. It can serve as a safety measure against dropping the knife during use or as a grip to help pull the knife from its sheath. This solution also helps secure the knife from getting lost, for example, by using paracord or a line.
Handle Materials for Comfort, Durability, and Collectible Value
Venn handle scales come in a variety of materials. The most durable are certainly the G10 composite scales, which also offer a wider range of color options. Micarta is also used, slightly less durable but considered by some to be more elegant and more comfortable in hand. Carbon fiber is another option, both in classic form and in the exclusive FatCarbon variant, which is highly valued by collectors. The same goes for stabilized wood, which is also favored by enthusiasts. Many of Venn models feature a combination of all these materials on the handle.
Kydex And Holstex For Convenience And Divercity
Kydex and Holstex are both used in Venn sheaths, offering convenience and variety. Kydex is known for its durability and practicality, providing a secure hold and easy access to the knife. Holstex, on the other hand, adds more style with its textured surface and variety of finishes, while still maintaining excellent strength and functionality. The sheaths on Venn knives come with original modules, typically featuring a textile or leather belt loop in some versions. These modules are removable, and the sheath is compatible with the Adjustable Angular Buckle or Buckle for MOLLE Systems, both developed by MK Knives & Tools, allowing for customizable carrying options.
