The Humbler Liner Lock Flipper – From the Vision to Realisation

Vision and consistency in execution are core principles in the design philosophy at MK Knives & Tools. The production model Humbler Liner Lock Flipper is the result of a clear concept: a compact EDC blade that blends the heritage of two-handed slipjoint-style folding knives with modern design and construction.

From Custom to Production

Stylistically referencing the fixed-blade Scout (MK-02), the Humbler initially evolved into a line of custom folders, still in production today, where the blade was spring-locked in the fashion of classic pocketknives. While these customs are visually modern folders in terms of materials and design language, their construction remains traditional — and will remain that way in future custom iterations.

A Version for Modern Knife Fans

Over time, Marcin Kampkafounder and designer of MK Knives & Tools — moved toward creating a version of the Humbler aimed at users who prefer more contemporary folding knife mechanisms.

That’s how the production version came to be, featuring a liner lock and flipper for quick blade deployment.

Liner Lock – Everyday Simplicity

Considering the Humbler is a fully functional yet compact knife (177 mm | 6.97” overall, 75 mm | 2.95” blade), the designer opted for a classic liner lock. After testing and refining the prototype, he concluded that for a knife of this size and intended for standard everyday use, there was no need to implement more heavy-duty locking systems. Grip comfort is enhanced by a finger cutout on the handle, which helps stabilize the hold, and a chamfered lock bar for easier thumb access when disengaging the lock.

Flipper Instead of Thumb Stud

Choosing a flipper tab over a thumb stud was a natural decision — it ensures full accessibility to the compact 75 mm (2.95″) blade while preserving a clean silhouette from tip to handle. The flipper itself was designed with a small recess and point for controlled traction, while remaining as unobtrusive to the finger as possible.

Hidden Pivot and Classic Aesthetic

A key design goal was to retain the visual continuity with the slipjoint version. Special attention was given to hiding the pivot, which in typical locking folders is visible on the outside of the handle scales. In this case, the pivot was successfully concealed without adding any extra thickness to the build. The result is a modern Humbler that visually echoes a classic two-handed folder, where only small screws attaching the scales are visible.

Modern Clip – Without Compromise

Another consideration was the pocket clip. Although rarely found in slipjoint designs, a clip became a necessity for the production version. Various clip types were tested, including deep carry options, but none worked as intended — either interrupting the knife’s clean lines or clashing with the overall design. The final choice was a right-side clip that follows the shape of the backspacer. When clipped to the pocket, it sits with minimal visual presence — subtle and non-intrusive.

That said, it’s worth noting that a knife this compact (closed length: 102 mm | 4.02”, weight: 85 g | 3.0 oz) carries well in the pocket even without clipping it to the edge.

Premium Steel – MagnaCut

Guided by the idea that small doesn’t mean less capable, the decision was made to use premium blade steel. The choice landed on MagnaCuta modern, stainless, and highly durable American steel, appreciated in the knife community for its excellent balance of properties. Many users consider it one of the best steels currently available on the market.

Production Versions

Several Humbler production versions have been designed, featuring various blade finishes and handle colorways. These models were manufactured in collaboration with the well-regarded Bestech Knives, known for their high production standards. The knives will soon be available through official MK Knives & Tools dealers (HERE!)
